The Curtain Mystery (First published in OpiumMagazine.com, February 2004)

I often think of Mr. Dogeater, his actual surname may have been Glowaski, when I open my blinds to welcome a new day. I never found out why he refused to open his curtains. Mr. Dogeater died when I was twelve, taking his secret to the grave with him. The mystery still haunts me. Well, maybe it doesn't haunt me, or trouble me, or even give me pause, but it does make me say 'hmm.'  Full Story

 

Relieved in Europe (First published in OpiumMagazine.com, September 2002)

When I was a child, my parents would pull off alongside major highways to allow my siblings and me to take a nature break. This was only done along more remote areas of the highways and we were always well protected from on-lookers by open car doors and the human shields provided by our parents. These roadside relief breaks stopped after I was about eight and I certainly don't remember any other incidents of public urination after that age. I think that makes me unique amongst the men that I rub shoulders with on a daily basis in Europe.  Full Story

 

Staring 30 In the Bald Spot

The bald spot that appeared on my head when I was 17 precipitated my goal of not letting my baldness upset me on my 30th birthday.  Many of my friends took great pleasure in reminding of the need for this goal.  I still have that same bald spot while many of those friends have bid farewell to their days of hairstyle options.  I know that I shouldn’t take pleasure in the pain of others.  Full Story
